New York City

NYC | Day 6 | Lighter Day, Roosevelt Island, and Ice Cream!

Since we got in so late last night (this morning?), we got up in time to grab breakfast from the hotel, but then went back to bed afterwards. Once we finally got up and moving for the day, we headed over to Roosevelt Island. This lies between Manhattan and Queens (where we are now). It seems to be its own little world there; it was a very charming place, relative to the rest of the city that we’ve seen so far. Most of the rest of the city has been very ‘brusque,’ and a bit much to handle. However, I’ve determined that if we ever have to live in NYC, I’d be okay with Roosevelt Island.

The bridge we walked over to get to the island.

We stopped at a little Amish market first, and we picked up some cheese and olives. This seemed like the place to be. Several people appeared to be getting their week’s worth of fresh produce from here.

How could we resist some pictures with giant red letters?

The red letters put us just past the midpoint of the island. Overall, it is about as long as Central Park, but maybe only a third as wide. We kept heading south to see a few notable landmarks.

The Smallpox hospital. This is the first hospital in the country that was devoted entirely to taking care of the smallpox population. It is now recognized as a historic landmark.

Just past this hospital is Roosevelt Park. Along the walk down there (on the west side of the island, facing Manhattan) is a clear view of the United Nations building. Once we moseyed around the park, we headed back north until we could grab the bus to take us back to the middle of the island.

Our MTA passes were valid for the Gondola over to Manhattan, so we rode over the water, then got back on and came back to Roosevelt Island.
This lighthouse doesn’t seem to have a fancy name. It is just called “Lighthouse.” This is the northern most point of the island.

We headed back to where we started on the island to grab a bus back to the hotel.

These little fellows greeted us on our walk back towards the Roosevelt Bridge.

We had some leftover Chinese food, then headed to Ample Hills Creamery in Queens. Jessie and Billy’s wedding featured some of their ice cream last night, and we found out they had a location relatively near to us, so it gave us some place to grab dessert tonight! Adam had the dark chocolate, which he liked (unsurprisingly). I got their version of cookies and cream, as well as a fluffernutter option as well. Both of mine were also tasty.

We headed back home, since I had to finish yesterday’s blog as well as get today’s done. Movie night!
